One thing that I've always loved to do is make DIY crafts. Often, instead of buying something, I immediately start to think about how I can make it myself instead. As I was perusing Pinterest the other day, I came upon a blog post about making homemade coasters and instantly knew my next project! I gathered some basic materials and set out to make some personalized coasters for my little NYC apartment and a place for my morning coffee cup. There are a ton of tutorials online, but I decided to try three different coasters to see which I liked best. The best part of this project is a lot of the materials can be found around the house.
What you'll need:
- Mod PodgeR - Plain tile (I stole a few from my parents house when I was visiting!) - Felt dots for the bottom of the tiles - Spray laquer for the top coat (can be found at any hardware store) - Materials for the design part of the coasters
The first kind I made was with some scrapbook paper I had laying around. The second was with a scrap of polka dotted material I had. The third and fourth coasters (my favorites!) I actually used pictures for the top surface. Using an app for the iPhone called MoPho you can order pocket-sized prints of your iPhone photos right from your phone! The company then prints them and sends them to you. They're also the perfect size for this project (the size of the tile), and therefore no trimming was needed.
Here are some step-by-step photos of the process:
The process of making your own coasters is very simple and leaves a lot of room for creativity. You can pretty much use any decorative thing you want and Mod PodgeR it to the tile. Try pictures from magazines, cool wrapping paper, or have your kids paint a picture on the tile! These easy DIY crafts are perfect for a summer afternoon.
