With how cool the weather has been here in the Northeast, it's hard to imagine we are still in summer, or that we've had summer at all. After all, there have been 4 days that hit 90. 4!! That's unheard of. But nonetheless, we've managed to make the most of summer and before it's gone we wanted to share some of our favorite summer memories from the summer of 2014.
I grew up on Long Island, yet this year was my first time in Fire Island. And boy, is it lovely! This little enclave of beaches requires a ferry ride from various towns in Long Island but is worth the trek. With no cars allowed, this quiet, quaint and pristine island features water that was, dare I say, not opaque. It didn't hurt that both weekends I went this season were weather perfection - 80s and sunny with not a hint of humidity, but I'd love Fire Island anyway.
This summer was also one where I ventured to Sonoma with my college roommate, Cindy. Not only did I get to reconnect with a great friend, we drank copious amounts of wine and hatched an idea for a blog of our own. Because you can never be too busy!
This has been the most momentous summer of my life having gotten married to the most awesome lady I've ever met AND going on a honeymoon to Costa Rica. Securing life-long memories together in the rainforest and beaches of Central America was unlike any other summer memory I can imagine.
Otherwise, back here in New York, as Danielle mentioned, it's been a very mild summer. Even so, we can't get enough of being outdoors and the beach, so trips to Governor's Island and Long Beach, NY were among several day trips around the area - perfect additions to any summer in NYC. There were some good opportunities to seek out indoors, too. We took in a Broadway show to cap-off the summer!
Earlier this summer I took my second trip to Nashville for the Country Music Association Festival. While last year I was still new to the genre of country music, this year I'm a full-on fan, and was able to fully appreciate the 15+ stages and incredible variety of super talented musicians on display. I also got to attend the CMT Music Awards before the festival. It was quite the cool experience to watch an awards show live.
My second big trip of the summer is coming up - keep your eyes peeled for a post on my European adventures. I've also enjoyed some day trips to the city and time spent at the lake.
Warm weather means winery time, so I kicked off the summer and visited Torne Valley Vineyards with my mom for Mother's Day. Located in Suffern, NY, Torne Valley is the only fully functioning winery in Rockland County so my mom and I had to check it out. I also went to my first horse race, Belmont Stakes, with some friends. I've always wanted to go to the Kentucky Derby, but Elmont is a little closer to home so I settled. California Chrome was competing for the Triple Crown and unfortunately didn't win, but it was fun nonetheless!
For the second year in a row I went to the Mets Game July 4th. The Fireworks over the field after the game were pretty cool. I spent a lot of time outside too, hiking and visiting the beach!
What are some of your favorite summer memories?
