House Party Goes to the Food Bank for Westchester!
Last Wednesday, March 23rd, the House Party team went to the Food Bank for Westchester to chip-in and volunteer and meet with fellow volunteers. It's a remarkable place! The Food Bank serves over 265 local hunger-relief programs throughout Westchester County, including food pantries, soup kitchens, child and adult day-care centers, and shelters. The Food Bank provides 95% of all the food given to hungry families, children and seniors as cooked meals or groceries to take home.
We arrived at the Food Bank for Westchester at noon where Lynn Kaplan, the amazing volunteer coordinator, greeted and walked us through our tasks for the day. Whether it's unpacking, sorting, consolidating or repacking, there are plenty of tasks that need a hand. So, we then got to work, organized hundreds of food and beverage items to go to those in need. Each product was carefully scrutinized for quality, sorted and packed according to stringent Feeding America requirements to ensure that healthy, safe items make their way to folks waiting for these items.
Lynn was kind enough to take us on a tour of the facility as well, where we learned of their massive refrigerated food trucks, as well as the partnerships that the Food Bank for Westchester has with various schools-providing food to make sure children never have to go hungry.
It was amazing to see all the hard work that goes into the Food Bank for Westchester. Let's just say there are tons of tasks, work and volunteers that coordinate behind-the-scenes to bring the much needed food items to those that need them most. We were humbled to spend our afternoon there.
