The 4-1-1 on Steph

The 4-1-1 on Steph

In each installment of The 4-1-1, we interview a different member of the House Party Team, asking the big questions that are on everyone's minds. In this one, we're chatting with Stephanie Howard, a Senior Program Manager on the Program Operations team. Steph joined House Party 5 years ago and ever since, we've loved the structured process she brings to the company and her fun quirkiness at the office! Steph has very strong planning and troubleshooting skills that guarantee smooth executions of the campaigns you get to enjoy, all while keeping her cool.

I recently had lunch with Steph to chat about her experience here at House Party and what makes her tick.

You recently had your 5 year anniversary with House Party - wow! How does that feel, and what do you enjoy most about working here?

If feels really good. It's actually quite surprising to think that I've been here for 5 years already. We've seen House Party change and evolve, always on to the next great thing. It's never stayed stagnant, which is probably why the time has gone by so fast! I love the people and the flexibility, which is one of the biggest reasons I've stayed. I don't think I would do well in a big corporate environment. I like the work, too - always getting to learn about new products and getting to work with new clients. It never feels repetitive.

I know you and your husband, Morgan, are huge movie buffs. When did your love for movies begin, and if you could have dinner with any celebrity (dead or alive), who would you choose?

I always loved movies growing up and I think that's part of the connection to Morgan (husband) that I have. He was the same way, almost to a freakish level, and so it's no surprise that he's in the movie industry now. And if I could have dinner with any celebrity, I'd pick Lucille Ball because she's so funny and love "I Love Lucy."

You have a grumpy cat calendar on your desk with humorous daily grumpy quotes we all get to enjoy. Which one has been your favorite so far?

grumpycatblog 4-1-1

There are a lot I like, but I've been taping up some of my favorites around my desk. I really like the one that says "Unless life also gives you water and sugar, your lemonade is going to suck!" (laughs)

If you could step into a time machine today, would you step into it? And if yes, would you choose to go to the past, or to the future?

Hmm...if I only had one choice, I think would step in and go to the past to the 70's and hang out with my parents when they were young before they had kids to see what they were like. Plus, I really like the 70's as an era - I'd go to a Led Zeppelin concert!

We've been serenaded at times with some quirky, upbeat songs you belt out when the feeling arises (one of my personal faves is "Friday is the New Monday"...catchy!) Do you like to sing a lot in other places too (the car, the shower, etc?) What's your favorite karaoke song?

I love to sing - in the car, in the shower...I sing other people's songs plus I make up my own. Sometimes I just make up my own melodies and hum them. I'm a big fan of singing, so much so that my husband makes up songs too or chimes in when I'm singing and it turns into a duet (laughs). Morgan even made up a country-style song the other day about me stealing his moonshine! For Karaoke, I'd sing George Strait's "All My Exes Live in Texas" or a Tom Petty song because I love Tom Petty. And I don't think I've always sang the way I do, so I'm not sure where it started.

Tell two truths and one lie about yourself, and let's see if I can guess the lie!

I grew up in Michigan, I've been to Thailand, and I met Molly Shannon from SNL.

I'm going to guess that you haven't been to Thailand because I know for sure you grew up in Michigan, and I'm guessing that you might have actually met Molly Shannon. I know you went to China recently but don't think you've ever been to Thailand?

Ha that's right - good job!

Nice, but you almost got me! So is Molly Shannon as cool as she seems?

Yeah, I saw her at the airport and she was waiting in line at the food court. I'm pretty good at spotting celebrities so we walked by her and heard her talking on the phone, then knew for sure it was her. After she sat down, we softly approached her and she was really nice and cool. She's apparently from Ohio so was going back home to visit her family.

You live so close to NYC now, but grew up in a more rural area - do you think you'll stay a city girl from now on, or move out to the 'burbs later?

Well we've been having these conversations. When we got married, we had a 7 year plan to move to California. But now, I don't know. We keep going back and forth. Morgan and I bought a 2 bedroom condo in Jersey City so if we want to have kids, we'll need a bigger place but it's expensive to live here. I used to think I'd want to raise my kids the way I was raised, but now I don't necessarily see it as a disadvantage to grow up as a city kid. I'm sort of a mover though and like to experience new places, so we'll see - maybe we'll move to California one day. Morgan's parents will be retiring there so maybe in a few years! But then we recently started talking about Boise, ID if Morgan is burned out.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I didn't always know what I wanted to be when I grew up, but in 5th grade, growing up in Michigan, you had to write a speech about what you wanted to be when you grow up. It was a competition with schools around the state. After doing some research, I realized I might want to be a movie director and I picked Steven Spielberg because his movies were huge at that time. After meeting Morgan, I found out he chose the same for his speech - he always wanted to be a director and had picked Steven Spielberg too! It was unique and cute because most of the other kids picked more mainstream professions like cops.

I think Amanda Seyfried is your doppelganger - has anyone else ever told you that, or that you look like a certain person or celebrity?

No one has told me that before, but when my niece was younger, people thought I was her mom when she came along with me to the store. But I don't think anyone has ever compared me to a celebrity.

doppelganger 4-1-1

This or that

  1. Peanut butter - creamy or chunky? Creamy
  2. Seasons - spring or fall? Well after this winter, spring for sure! But fall is nice too.
  3. Sunrise or Sunset? Sunset, I'm not a morning person.
  4. Appetizer or dessert? That's a tough one! It really depends on my mood. If I had to choose one or the other, I think I'm gonna go with dessert.
  5. Mexican or Chinese food? Oh Mexican, by far...Tacos, chips and salsa!

Got any questions for Steph that Mel didn't ask? Post em here and we'll get them answered!
