5 Delicious smoothie recipes

Where would we be without smoothies? It seems these creamy and healthy concoctions are everywhere these days and it makes me wonder how I lived most of my life without them. Last year I splurged on a Vitamix blender and I've been hooked ever since. Anything and everything goes into that machine which blends it into a smooth and delicious treat. If you have kids, you can easily sneak veggies into a smoothie and your child will be none the wiser. Mine has kale all the time and thinks he's getting peanut butter and banana (which he is, but bonus veggie content #FTW!). I have a smoothie almost daily, but I'm always looking to mix it up (pun partly intended). We posted some awesome smoothie recipes in the past, and we figured we would add some more of our favorite smoothie recipes. Of course, feel free to experiment and let us know some of your faves!  

Blueberry and chocolate

This one is all about the antioxidants. I start with coconut water or almond milk or coconut milk - just enough to cover the blades (I go lactose-free but you can use milk or even water), then I add kale and carrot. I don't bother peeling them, just wash and trim! Then add 1/2 cup or so frozen blueberries (or strawberries, mixed berries or any frozen fruit),. After that, add-in 2 tbsp of flax meal, a scoop of chocolate protein powder (I use Progenex More Muscle because of CrossFit) and ice. Blend and viola, blueberry chocolate heaven.

Now that's healthy and delicious!

Peanut butter and banana

I use the same wet ingredients (coconut water, almond milk etc.), then add half of a very ripe banana (the great thing about smoothies is you can use fruit that's a bit soft or mushy), 1/2 an avocado for creaminess, 2 tbsp PB2, 1 tbsp flax meal, spinach, kale or leafy veggie of your choice. I like to put a veggie in all my smoothies as it's an easy way to ensure I get extra vitamins. Go ahead and top with ice and blend! You can add a pinch of agave or some pitted dates for sweetener as well, to taste.

Pineapple mango

Try using some orange juice and water as your liquid base, then add carrots, flax meal, frozen mango and frozen pineapple, ice and either avocado or coconut cream for thickness. I'm big on fiber, hence the addition of flax meal, but you can feel free to leave it out if you prefer. This will taste like an Orange Julius for those that remember that place!

Mint chocolate chip

I used to have a Shamrock Shake each March, but wanted to make a healthier version (after all, have you seen the calories in one of those??). There are several recipes out there, but my favorite way to make it is by eyeballing it.

I fill the blender to the 1 cup mark with unsweetened almond milk or cashew milk, a handful of organic spinach (frozen or fresh), 1 frozen banana, a splash of pure peppermint extract, splash of vanilla extract, a scoop of protein powder (I like Sunwarrior Warrior Blend Protein, Natural) and a few ice cubes (you can nix the ice cubes if using both a frozen banana and frozen spinach). Blend well, then toss in a small handful of semi-sweet chocolate chips and blend just for a few seconds. You can also add avocado for both extra creaminess and as well as a source of healthy fat.


Carrot cake smoothie

Actual carrot cake can be loaded with fat and sugar, so why not try this version as an alternative dessert or post-workout snack? This is another smoothie where you can eyeball the ingredients (carrots, bananas, non-dairy milk, cinnamon, vanilla extract, ice) and it'll still taste great! I sometimes like to add flax meal, protein powder, and walnuts as well.
