Eating clean: the Paleo lifestyle

Prep for the week: frittata, steak, shaved Brussels sprout salad and sweet potatoes.

As many of you know from being frequent readers of this blog, I'm kind of into CrossFit. And many CrossFitters adapt a Paleo lifestyle. What does this mean? Well, it's short for Paleolithic and essentially believes we should eat like our cave people ancestors. Now, don't worry, you won't have to go kill a woolly mammoth for dinner, but you might want to put down that cheese and bread cause those are both no-nos. Yep, a Paleo diet involves no dairy, no grain, no legumes, no sugar and of course, no processed foods.

Before you run screaming for the hills (believe me, I did when I first thought about this), it's not as bad as it sounds. One of the big reasons to try being Paleo, even for a few weeks, is to rid your body of the sugar addiction you probably don't know you even have. It's also a great way to see if you have any issues or reactions to gluten or dairy, again, even though you might not realize it. Adding these items back in slowly will tell you if they perhaps make you bloated, gassy, etc. I have no allergies but regardless, when I don't eat grain and dairy I am so much leaner! Plus, you know what is Paleo? Bacon. And meat. And fish. And fruits and vegetables. Did I mention bacon?

Even if you don't want to go whole hog, I've got some yummy recipes you can try and some great sites if you are considering "eating clean."

Meet Michelle Tam, also now a cookbook author, who was a couch potato with her hubby until he discovered CrossFit and Paleo. She tried and became hooked, and now whips up delicious meals for us to steal, I mean, make. Nom, nom indeed.

Elana's Pantry

Elana Amsterdam gave up grains 14 years ago when she was diagnosed with Celiac disease and hasn't looked back. Another author (I sense a trend), she offers delicious gluten-free dishes and treats that are super easy to make, and of course, yummy.

Here are just a couple of my favorite Paleo recipes:

Paleo porridge

If you love oatmeal, this is a hearty substitute and honestly, will keep you fuller much longer, IMO.

Ingredients: 1/4 c almond flour 1/4 c almond milk (you can use a tad more if you like your porridge more runny than thick) 1 tbsp almond or other nut butter 2 tbsp flax or chia seeds

  1. Mix in a safe container or bowl and microwave for 1 minute.
  2. Then add: 1 egg, a handful of sunflower seeds and a handful of dried fruit (although you can use fresh fruit too).
  3. Microwave for 90 seconds.
  4. Top with a little maple syrup, mix and enjoy!

Caveman cookies:

Again, Paleo doesn't = deprivation.

They taste as good as they look - maybe better!


1 1/2 c almond flour 2/3 c almond butter or sunflower seed butter 1/2 c honey or maple syrup 1 "flax" egg (1 T. ground flax + 3 T. water) or 1 organic egg 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 3/4 c organic dark chocolate chips

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silpat.
  2. Combine all ingredients, except chocolate, in a medium bowl until well combined.
  3. Fold in chocolate chips.
  4. Drop small scoops of dough (about 1-2 tablespoons) onto baking sheet and lightly press down in the center.
  5. Bake for 10-11 minutes until bottoms just start to turn brown.
  6. Remove from oven and let cool 2-3 minutes before transferring to a wire rack. They will be soft when removed from oven but firm up in a couple of minutes.
  7. Don't eat them all at once :)
