5 Natural cleaning alternatives

5 Natural cleaning alternatives

I'm going to be honest, I hate cleaning. I mean who actually enjoys it? But I want a clean home so it's a necessary evil. What isn't necessary though is bringing toxic chemicals into my home with most off-the-shelf cleaning products. There are actually so many natural cleaning alternatives that allow you to make your own products (normally for a fraction of the cost) and of course, they're so much better for you and your family. And for those of you asking...yes, they really do clean as well as the typical stuff. So why not give them a try - you'll know that your home is not only clean but free of toxic chemicals.

Floor cleaner

This one is for laminate flooring courtesy of Mamatron and I bet has about 10 less ingredients than anything you'd buy in the store.

To a measuring cup or jar, add the following:

  • 1 part water
  • 1 part white vinegar
  • 1 part 70% Isopropyl (Rubbing) alcohol
  • Few drops of liquid dish detergent

Mix all ingredients together and pour into a fine mist spray bottle.

  1. Sweep or vacuum your floors first
  2. Spray the cleaner in a fine mist, low over the surface area to be cleaned
  3. Allow to set for a few minutes, then use a microfiber mop or towel to wipe it up.

This mixture cleans effectively and with ease. It dries quickly and it is so simple to use. NO BUCKET REQUIRED! When you're done mopping, just toss the microfiber mop head or towel into the laundry until next time.

Oven cleaner

This is probably one of the worst things you can use. Think about heating your oven with toxic cleaning chemicals to 500 degrees for HOURS and letting that smell waft through your house. No thank you. Here's all you need:

  • 1 cup of water
  • 10 drops of essential oils of your choice (or none at all)
  • 1/2 cup of regular salt
  • 1 and 1/4 cup of baking soda
  • 1/4 cup of white vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons of liquid castile soap

Begin by mixing together the essential oils with 1/4 cup of water. This is a pre-treatment and should be sprayed on the oven door and walls after you have preheated the oven to 300 degrees.

Next, mix 1/4 cup of salt with 1/2 cup of baking soda. Sprinkle this on your oven to work on those heavy spots. Finally, mix the remaining ingredients (minus the vinegar and 1/2 cup of water) into a paste and spread the paste on the oven walls, allowing it to sit overnight.

Mix the remaining 1/2 cup of water with the vinegar into a spray bottle and spray the entire oven. Wipe down and rinse.

Glass cleaner

This is from the Wellness Mama who was motivated to create this after her child was caught licking the windows. The same can be said of your pets too, though!

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tbsp vinegar
  • 10-15 drops essential oil (optional, but helps the vinegar smell)

Combine ingredients in a spray bottle (preferably glass) and use as needed to clean window. Microfiber clothes clean best with this recipe.

Tub cleaner

This two ingredient concoction from Apartment Therapy is super simple, with proven results!

  • 1 grapefruit
  • 1/2 cup course kosher salt

Cut the grapefruit in half. Then sprinkle salt liberally on each half. Wet the bath tub and sprinkle remaining salt onto tub. Scour the tub with each salted grapefruit half, rinse and watch your tub sparkle!

Dish soap

A few ingredients make it easy to wash your dishes toxin-free with this recipe, courtesy of The Humbled Homemaker.

  • 1/2 cup liquid castile soap
  • 1/8 cup water
  • 4 drops essential oil (scent of choice)
  • 1 tsp vinegar

Mix all ingredients and store in container of your choice, such as an old soap container. You're good to go. Get cleaning!
