Giving back: charitable purchases

With the holiday season fast approaching, we had reason to pause and consider some of the charitable causes that we love. However, we wanted a slight angle on it: charitable causes that also coincide with our purchases. What better way to give than by giving back and being able to wear or incorporate the item and its charitable story into your daily life? They're conversation starters and action motivators. Our own Danielle and Brian gave us some of their faves...

Danielle: If you're like me, you really want to give back and always have the best intentions. But let's be real, life gets in the way. We have our own obligations - financial or otherwise - and most of us just aren't as charitable as we'd like to be. That's why I'm a sucker for a charitable purchase. It combines two things I love, shopping and helping those in need. And while I excel at the former, I lack in the latter. So, I give with my wallet. Whenever I can. Basically if you have a product that offers to donate part of the proceeds to a charity, I'll buy it. Not only does this make me feel good, chances are it's an item I need or want anyway, so if it can help someone, all the better. Here are just a few of the charitable purchases I've made:

Toms and Warby Parker - Both companies offer a one for one incentive. You buy shoes or glasses and they donate a pair to someone in need.

Flex Watches - One watch sale feeds five hungry children. Add to that these watches are interchangeable with cool faces and bands and this decision was a no brainer.


Flex Watches not only has tons of styles and colors, they give back to a number of charities.

Bombas Socks - Another instance of one for one. They give a pair of socks for every pair purchased. Plus they are supposed to be super comfortable and come in a ton of cool color combos.

Brian: I too, love to accomplish a little extra element of good when purchasing something that I need. With so many options out there today, as Danielle alluded to, there are plenty of ways to shop (and get the benefits of retail therapy) while giving back as well. Sounds like a "win-win" to me if ever I've heard one. There's also the additional element of charitable branding which now, thanks to trends, media and social media are easily as popular as mainstream consumer retail brands. After all, who hasn't seen a pink Susan G. Komen for the Cure T-shirt or yellow Livestrong bracelet adorning someone on a nearly daily basis?

So, I've gathered a few of my favorite charitable purchases to show you just what I mean:

House of Talents - In the spirit of full-disclaimer, I'll admit that I'm former a classmate of House of Talents founder and CEO, Kate Herzog. So, with that out of the way, let me tell you why I love House of Talents: if you're looking to infuse your home with authentic international artifacts from baskets, to ironwork, to jewelry to hand-made shea butter soaps, this is a great way to do it. How is it different from any other provider though? House of Talents returns much of the proceeds to the very communities from which the pieces were made. HOT also has worked to build educational infrastructure such as libraries and scholarships for its network of artisans and, in turn, families can gain financial independence and an opportunity for education.

Krochet Kids International - I actually stumbled across this non-profit clothing and accessories brand on Instagram. The brand works to empower people to rise above poverty through crocheting. Over 150 people in Uganda and Peru are working and receiving education thanks to the money they've earned through KKI. The pieces are beautiful and hand signed. It's beginning to get cold around here, so I'm planning to buy a Port watchcap for the winter!

Wildfire Tees - Having grown up in Colorado, I hold a dear place in my heart for the Rocky Mountains and wilderness. Each summer wildfires seem to ravage it more violently than the year before. This year, not only fire, but recent monumental floods have meant thousands of displaced families and property damage. This company was founded by a group of designers, marketers and printers who wanted to help with the related relief. 100% of profits are donated to wildfire (and flood) relief efforts. And I can always use T-shirts! (Big thanks to House Party's own Systems Architect, Ryan W. for bringing this organization to our attention!)
