The College Football Playoff: Oregon and Ohio State are in!
It was but 4 short months ago that the football season, both NFL and NCAA, began. It had been a long 8 month wait leading up the season's kickoff. We were so thrilled that Danielle and I took to the blog in celebration, counting the ways we were rejoicing for the next 4 months of busy spectating weekends. While many folks prefer the NFL season (which just had their divisional playoff games this past weekend), there's an equally ardent fan base with a voracious appetite for the college game. It's into this camp that I fall and if you identify with this group, this year in particular has some pretty sizable significance: It's the first-ever College Football Playoff. As I alluded to in our September post, this is a big deal since teams are no longer subject to the BCS ranking methodology (a computer-based system that seemed to make String Theory look like a game of sudoku) and even more importantly the best teams get to battle-it-out, head-to-head.
While the College Football playoff selection committee hasn't been without questionable decisions and rankings, it's great to see teams that might not otherwise play each other land on the same field. Such was the case two weeks ago when #2-ranked Oregon beat #3-ranked Florida State in the Rose Bowl semifinal matchup and when #4-ranked Ohio State University stunned #1-ranked Alabama in the Sugar Bowl by upsetting the heavy favorite to win their own spot in the national championship.
And so the matchup is determined, practices have been held and tonight #2 Oregon and #4 Ohio State meet on the field of play to hammer-out who the first College Football Playoff National Champion will be. It's merely a matter of hours at this point and while we're giddy for game-time to get underway, we're a bit saddened as well. The sooner the game is played, the sooner the inaugural season of the College Football Playoff is in the history books. So, while the often overshadowing NFL still has a couple weeks left in its season, we take time today to instead salute those playing in the first-ever College Football Playoff National Championship. This is it for all the marbles, gents!
Have you been following the College Football Playoff coverage this season? What are your thoughts and who are you rooting for tonight?
Relish each and every play, we've got a long wait ahead of us once this game wraps-up!
